What Students are Wearing this Fall

For decades, fashion has served as a way for individuals to express themselves through the simple art of dressing. Various trends are forever appearing, reappearing, and making a mark on the latest styles year-round. Throughout the year, many CSULB students across campus are often seen slaying the hypothetical runway with the outfits they typically throw together in a hurry. As we begin to fall into the autumn season, there have been numerous trends that have made their way onto student’s lists of fashion favorites for the fall season.

Here are five CSULB students who have incorporated some of today’s most popular fashion trends into their outfits.

Third-year studio arts major, Vanessa Carlos, perfectly demonstrates the evergreen act of layering within their outfit here, as they dress a simple collared tee with a knit vest from their grandfather’s closet and decorating it with trendy accessories to complete the look. The tie acts as the eye-catching statement piece that (unironically) ties their outfit together while portraying a pleasing plaid pattern. Ties have resurfaced in fashion in the past year among many, honoring the reminiscence of the early 2000’s academia-punk aesthetic while also replacing the common necklace or scarf that is often seen occupying the neck today. “I actually thrifted this tie. I really strive for androgyny and just like wearing what I feel most confident in,” Carlos said. Another trend they incorporated into their outfit are the headphones. Not only are headphones popular for listening to music, but they have become a favored accessory used to spice up just about any type of outfit.

Pleated mini skirts have come and gone among popularity over recent years, and it seems as though they have made their way back into style. “I want to definitely incorporate more skirts into my wardrobe this fall. I have a couple of mini skirts already…then once it gets a little more cold I think jackets look good paired with them,” said third-year sociology major Alphonso Diaz. Diaz is seen styling their plaid pleated mini skirt with a fleece-lined collared jacket and the Dr. Martens Oxford shoe, paired atop a pair of white laced ankle socks, helping to radiate a stylishly dainty flare. Dr. Martens have made a major mark on today’s fashion as well, as they are continuously seen acting as the foot’s ultimate staple piece across differing styles.

Maxi skirts have made their way into the hearts of many this season, as second-year consumer affairs major, Francine Garcia, depicts. Garcia mentions that she typically likes to pair her maxi skirts with a simple top that won’t take attention away from the skirt, as she shows here, pairing her floral, flowy skirt with a plain white tee. She also incorporates headphones into her look, as many are often seen doing today. “Normally I wear air pods, but I bought these headphones a couple of weeks ago and I think they look so cute. I almost feel like they’re like a headband,” Garcia said.

The maxi skirt makes its way into the spotlight yet again with second-semester grad student and linguistics major, Jackie Rivera styling it to perfection with her distinctive accessories. Pairing the skirt with a flaming-hot bandana atop her braid, and a radiant one-of-a-kind purse they got in Oaxaca, Mexico, these accessories work to pull her look together in a uniquely eye-catching way. Bandanas are seen incorporated into various hairstyles this season, with it wrapped around the head, as depicted by Jackie, being one of the most popular ways in which it’s worn. Another trend she blended into her outfit is the chunky necklace. “I got my necklace from a Powwow last year and I’ve pretty much been wearing it every day since…it’s also an art piece,” Rivera said. Universally seen acting as a statement jewelry piece to many outfits, a chunky necklace can add that extra pop of style to just about any look.

Wide-leg jeans have risen to the top of the seemingly never-ending list of the various styles of jeans. Portraying a wide and rather flowy silhouette of the legs, wide-leg jeans are often seen favored among numerous differing styles. First-year psychology major, Juniper Tran, says that they prefer this style of jeans because the flare of the wide leg allows for a comfortable wear and they’re ideal for hot days when that extra legroom is appreciated. As Tran is seen pairing it with a corduroy jacket, this rather cozy material is often incorporated into outfits amidst the fall season. Tran brings their look together nicely by finishing it off with a pair of infamous Dr. Martens. “I definitely see myself wearing my Docs more in the fall.”
