What’s Blooming in Fashion

As spring approaches, new fashion trends begin to bloom. Trend predictions for this upcoming season have been circulating all over the internet.

From as early as October 2023, Vogue forecasted that metallics, aprons, sheer white dresses and rose motifs would be staples for this spring. Even though floral print is nothing new for spring, roses have been predicted to be the “It flower” of the season.

Another prediction Vogue made was the return of  “geek chic.” This aesthetic includes small framed glasses, long skirts, sweaters and office-styled clothing.

Isabella Ceja is a student at California State University, Long Beach, majoring in fashion merchandising. She also works as a creative assistant for Students in Fashion, a student-run organization intended for people interested in art and business of fashion.

Ceja can’t get enough of the geek chic trend.

“If I had a boring office job I would definitely try and pull this aesthetic together to make things more interesting,” she said. “I love seeing this come back in style and people opting for bayonetta-style glass frames.”

Pinterest also jumped in on the hype by releasing its own spring trends predictions this January. Pinterest anticipates that metallics or “hot metals” will be the trending color of the season.

Red has been the dominant color in fashion throughout winter and Ceja hopes that the red trend will stay for spring.

“Red seemed to take over winter this year so I’m hoping to still see pops of red in outfits as well as green and pink as always,” Ceja said. She also believes that Coach will be the go-to brand of this season.

“Coach has been on top and I really love their new bags, especially their new denim line made with upcycled and repurposed denim,” she said.

As for her personal predictions, Ceja believes that denim midi skirts and kitten heels will be everywhere this spring. “I'm excited about dainty kitten heels with fun straps, colors, and appliqués. I’ve been loving the Carrie Bradshaw vibe with a new heel for every outfit,” she said.

Ceja explains that she likes to keep up with fashion trend predictions through social media platforms rather than on Vogue. “I like Pinterest for fashion predictions because we know it’s customized to ourselves so everything we’re seeing is relevant to us. Vogue on the other hand, has predictions for everyone so I feel like you don’t really feel represented if you’re into more niche aesthetics and styles,” Ceja said.

Larger fashion publications such as ELLE, Cosmopolitan and Vanity Fair are mesmerizing to look at but can sometimes come off as disconnected. In contrast, Ceja believes that social media trend predictions “feel more real and in the moment than an edited article.”

Isabella Edmundson is a fashion design major and sits as the publicity chairperson for CSULB’s Thrift Club. She speculates that capri pants will make a comeback.

“What’s trying to come back is capris. I see a lot of hate on them or people saying ‘I’m not participating in this trend’ but it’s going to make a big comeback especially for spring and summer,” Edmundson said.

She also projects that backless dresses, long low-rise maxi skirts, ballet-type flats and lace tops will be must-haves in everyone’s closets. But Edmundson can’t ignore her excitement for capris.

“I kind of hope capris make it. Even I feel I would look dumb in them but with a cute heel or sandal, and a little tank top or tight shirt, it could eat,” Edmundson said.

Following the very rainy winter Long Beach saw this year, Edmundson is overjoyed to start styling her outfits for warmer weather. “I'm breaking out my mini skirts and shorts, all my cute little tank tops and my sheer mesh tops. When it’s warm I feel like I can really make some cute outfits,” she said.

Business marketing major and event coordinator for Students in Fashion, Alyssa Chiok, believes that the cowboy aesthetic will become popular. This can be shown through popular singers like Beyonce and Lana Del Rey going a more country route.

Choik also believes leopard print and dark florals could start trending this spring, along with chunky silver jewelry.

“I think that funky designers who play with a lot of silver hardware or 3D graphics in their designs will be popular such as brands like Chopova Lowena or Telfar,” Chiok said.

With all this in mind, what fashion trends do you predict will be budding this spring?
